There’s a uniqueness to everyone as our body shapes and sizes differ. All bodies are beautiful and there’s no such thing as a typical body shape. However, the beauty of our body depends on what we wear and how we choose to carry it.

Have you ever wondered why a particular dress doesn’t suit you perfectly as it did the model though it says your exact size? The female body is categorized into several shapes based on the forms of each parts of the body. These forms determine how well a particular clothing suits you.

How do I know my body shape?

The first step is to take the measurements of these parts of your body:

1. Shoulder: measure across your back, from the edge of one shoulder to another.

2. Bust: place the tape on the fullest part of your bust, then wrap it around yourself. Make sure to go under your armpits and around your shoulder blades.

3. Waist: circle your natural waistline (the part above your belly button but below your rib cage) with the tape like a belt.

4. Hips: hold the end of the tape on the front of one hip then wrap it around. Be sure to go over the largest part of your buttocks.

I’m pretty sure you must have written each measurement taken. Now read closely between the lines below to ascertain which body shape is yours.

Rectangle/straight: Your waist measurements are about the same as your hip and bust. Shoulders and hips are also about the same width. Shoulder tops, tube dresses and belted waists would look great on you.

Triangle/pear: Shoulders and bust are narrower than your hips. You have slim arms and a fairly defined waist. You would look fabulous in clothing that shows off your waistline.

Spoon: This body shape is similar to the triangle body shape. Your hips are larger than busts or like in most cases, larger than the rest of your body. You possess a well defined waist and weight in your upper arms and upper thighs. Dresses with classic cuts and empire waist dresses are perfect for this body shape.

Hourglass: Your hips and bust are nearly equal in size. Your waist is narrow and well defined. You possess a rounded buttocks. Form fitting and tailored clothings enhances the beauty of this body shape.

Top hourglass: A general hourglass shape but your bust measurements are slightly larger than your hips. A-line skirts and tailored jackets would look great on you.

Bottom hourglass: Still the same general hourglass body shape but your hips are slightly larger than your bust. Form fitting dresses are equally befitting for this body.

Inverted triangle/apple: The hips are narrow, shoulder and bust are larger than the hips. Wear more of open necklines and clothing that shows off your legs.

Round/oval: You possess narrow hips and the midsection of your body is fuller. Bust is larger than the rest of your body. Tops that flare at the top or have vertical details makes this body shape look more beautiful.

Diamond: Broader hips than shoulders, a small bust and fuller waistline. You possess more weight in your upper legs and slender arms. Flowy off-the-shoulder dresses and boat neck tops are definitely made for this shape.

Athletic: Muscular and not particularly curvy. Your shoulder and hip measurements are about the same and waist is narrower than hips but undefined. Halter necks, racer back tops and strapless tops look good on this body.
